4L60E problem
Im working on a 97 jimmy 4x4 auto. Without warning lost reverse and upshifts are late. If accelerated hard it slips bad. Its got about 110k miles and no history that I know of. Im not very good at diagnostics so where do you think I should start. Also the fiuld seems ok and the filter didnt look plugged.
thanks for any help. |

Or does the tranny shift 1 - 2 - 3 -4 just late on the shifts? With that mileage it could be time for a proper over haul.

4L60E problem
The precipitates nature of the failure " without warning lost reverse" sure leads to a broken sun shell.
Are you positive it still has 2nd and 4th? Also you said the filter wasn't plugged,so you had the pan off,I assume. If it is still off and you have access to compressed air,you can take the mainline pressure tap out, drivers side near linkage, put trans in reverse position.engine off, then blow air into mainline tap. This will charge the reverse circut. Your looking for leaks around the valve body. If you do this you will see fluid blowing all over the place, look for an area where fluid is gurgling more than the other spots. This is an alternative to hooking a gauge up [did I just say that?] and sometimes you get lucky and find a gasket blown, loose bolts or,valve in vb displaced. Something that would cause a leak and make you lose reverse. Although I still think the sun shell may be the problem. Are you positive it still has 2nd and 4th? Oh thats right I already asked you that

is there a way to be sure if the sun shell is broke other than taking apart

If you can not determine this, take the vehicle to a tranny shop / person.

it is a matter of the mechanical design of the tranny ie; 700r4 - 4L60 , 4L60E - 4L65E.... IF the drive shell breaks or strips out it's splines .... you lose reverse , 2nd gear & over drive ( 4th)

torqueman
I bought a 4l60e from this man on Ebay it was cheaper then buying one from a junk yard and rebuilding it this one I bought was already rebuilt and it's running perfect PM me if you want his phone number even with the s/h charges from Tenn-to Houston, Texas it was still cheaper now that's a deal. I hope this helps you out. The reason for replacing mine it tore it up so bad that it couldn't be rebuilt. |

good to read you now know how the trans is working...... If you are keeping the vehicle, an upgraded shell known as "the beast" is a good addition to the tranny. It slips right in , no mods are needed. I have never seen one broken. Any trans shop should be able to purchase this shell from their supplier.....
