Has any attempt been made to read the codes?

I would correct the ATF level. Then I would double check that the electrical connectors are installed together tight and that there are no obvious problems w/them, the range switch is also said to be prone to probs.

I seem to remember something related to the ignition switch having an effect on the trans, but I do not recall any details.

AS Cobolt327 suggested, scan it for codes.

I would also check electricals, fuses and the intrument cluster. The instrument clusters are common faults in those model GM's I asume you have a GM Tahoe, Sierra or simular to that. I had simular issues with the display.
