Don't mean to hijack this thread but my 90 C1500 305 has the 700R4/4L60E trans. I always thought the "E" stood for electronic am I wrong? Why would the 4x4 have the 4L60? Just trying to learn

4l80 And 700r4,same Thing, And E,dose Stand For Electronic. And In 1990,u Dont Know Which One U Got,so If You Have A Throttle Cable Going Down To Trans,next To Cooler Lines,then Its Not Electronic

My apology for the hijack. I tried to edit out my "hijacked post" immediately after posting as I found the answer to my question, but was not allowed that function. Thanks for your reply, my cursory internet research says that the 4L60E was introduced in 1994 but the dealer ran the VIN of my 1990 and claims it has the 4L60E. I am the original owner, ordered and shipped from Canada.

Not quite the case, the 4L80E and the TH400 are very similar with the exception of the OD and electronics. The 4L60E and the 700R4 are the same except for the electronic control. Approx. 1993 is when the conversion happened from the 700 to the 4L60.

GM changed the nomeclature from 700R4 to 4L60 (without the "E") in 1990 or so, but it's the same trans. As noted, when the computer-controlled versions came out in 1993, the nomeclature was changed to 4L60E. I suspect that's the source of the confusion. The orignal trans in your 1990 truck could not be a 4L60E - the stock ECU couldn't control it.

Thanks again to everyone who has replied. I checked with another dealer today who also ran the VIN and he confirms 4L60 not the "E" the first dealer reported. Their information reads: 700R4/4L60 MD8
