4R100 Ford

I'm working on a 4R100 in an '01 Ford E350 with the 6.8L V10. The direct clutches are toast (no overdrive according to the clutch/band application chart) which was the symptom. It also has a broken inner race on the intermediate sprag (it's locked up). The problem is, this sprag looks nothing like what is in all my different illustrations that I have (ATSG, Mitchell and the parts catalog). This part looks as if it's an upgraded item, with all the patent #s I would say the manufacturer is proud of it. It attaches to the intermediate/direct drum just like shown in all the illustrations. Also, the rollers/sprags appear to be mounted perpendicular to the axis of the shaft (weird, Like the needles in a thrust bearing). I'm not sure of this as the unit doesn't appear to be serviceable.

My question is, is there an upgraded sprag for this application and does it sound like that's what I have already in there?

This van is owned by a Christian rock band out of Nashville and they tow a trailer with all of their equipment inside all over the southeast states. I want to make this tranny as durable as possible without breaking the bank. I haven't looked at any TSBs for this unit, I was wondering if anyone had any input as to how common this is or not with this particular tranny. And possibly what upgrades are available to make this unit more durable.

Thanks
Chris

replace drum with the older style drum. that diod style is high failure drum. your ford dealer will have all parts you need or tranny hard parts company will. the drum will run about 120 the sprag and outer race and drum washer.1888 5832823 will fix you up parts company

Cool

get rid of the mechanical diode as airworld points out.

when those diodes lock up , bad things happen

UPDATE

I went to Dacco to get the parts today. I got an older drum (E4OD) it was an exact match except for one thing. The splines on the intermediate sprag were coarser as well as the sprag being larger in diameter. So, I bought some new intermediate frictions and steels and everything looks fine from there. They didn't even carry any intermediate frictions that fit that mechanical diode.

Oh yeah, I got the new (used) drum loaded, with new bushings and the sprag as a complete unit for fifteen bucks!!!
