5.7 Vortec Casting #s Myth 062 & 906

http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/fram...ds/Vortec.html

Please Note: The casting number myth debunked:
The myth is that there is a difference in the head performance produced by these two castings.This myth was started by some Magazines that didn't do their homework before publishing their articles. This is the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth. So sayith the Grand Wizard GM and his Apprentice Wizard Sallee Chevrolet.
10239906 casting has one large single hump.
12558062 casting has 3 small humps.
If either of these two castings have not been altered by GM and the part number changed from 12558060 or altered by someone else (previous owner, etc.), the heads produced by either casting will be identical except for the external cosmetic difference. Both castings are used to make the 12558060 Vortec heads which are the true unaltered Vortec heads.
Heads from both castings come out of their cast IDENTICAL except for the minor cosmetic external differences!!!!!!!!

Hello mustangsallee,
the difference is not in the casting but in the exhaust seat and if anybody tells you different they are wrong. If you disagree take the two castings, pop the exhaust valves out and take a caliper to them....or you don't even need a caliper, the eye will not lie, the difference is extreme.

-ps- has or is sallee chevrolet trying to sell a bunch of 906 castings? just a thought

from what i've been told & read, some of the 906 heads have hardened exhaust seat insert's installed where others are flame hardened. the 062 seats are all flame hardened.

are u saying that the 906s do not flow as good as the 062s? im pretty sure they flow the same, whatever magizine said this later came back and corrected their mistake. Someone needs to flow test them to get to the bottom of this...

the 906 heads with the exhaust seat insert's don't flow as well as the 906 heads with the flame hardened seats. the seat insert blocks some of the exhaust bowl. with a little grinding to blend in the seat insert they are fine.

I emailed summit about there Crane Camís 10309-1 drop-in valve spring and retainer kit on a stock set of 5.7 vortec heads, and they ,

No. Check the following article on this subject;

http://support.summitracing.com/scri...09650234&316=1

Those heads will not accept the cam lift. The attached article explains
why. The 906 casting heads are very close to being useless.
