5 Speed Manual trans. 56 Chevy Truck?

I have a 1956 Chevy 3100 and ready to put a 327 in it. The original transmission was a 3 spd manual, but we want to put a 5 speed manual transmission in. We were thinking about a 87 camaro 5 speed, but not sure how teh shifter would work with a truck. Anyone have any experience with a 5 speed in a truck? What transmission should I be looking for? THanks

Ericrcan I had a camaro 5 speed in my 58.It did not last long.Factory spec.on the trans turned out to be "Up to300 hp and up 3000 pounds of vehicle weight".It worked out ok as far as shifter position but these trucks are too heavy for that transmission. In my opinion it is a grenade with the pin pulled. It is not if it fails but when it fails.Check out the thread "55 to 59 chevy truck owners" in the hotrodders lounge.Lots of truck guys there.

DD also has a leadfoot and a big block motor in his truck
like he said check out the 55-59 chevy truck thread in this forum

the shifter will probably to far back and hit the seat
modify it to work: that's what we do...

You can hybrid a S-10 t5 to get better shifter placement with V8 camaro/firebird guts to get what strength is available. Several guys out there build em, I can probably recommend a shop in your area. IF the parts were in good shape and you drove it like a street car, probably 325ft/pds and 300hp with a 15 or 16" tire

Think 1987: The TPI 350 wasn't available with a T5 BUT the 305 TPI was available with it.

283 with a T5 is fine, 290horse 350 is fine...much more and you have to remember not to carpet the gas pedal or roll out in 1st gear before you mash it

I did not build this 327, and I have not dyno tested it, but im almost certain its around 250hp. It is going to just be a daily driver type of car, but its my dads, so who knows if he wants to put the pedal to the metal... I have never had a manual in a car before, so im not familiar with them. Would you recommend a certain truck that has a manual transmission, like the s10? I have about 5 junkyards in teh area so I wanted to go pull one out and rebuild it.

Also, I tried looking through the 55-59 chevy truck thread, but its a lot of pages so i have to do it in spurts..
