The non compliant clear is better, however we must live under the rule of our government.... I wont even get started on that issue.

I have only used the HS clear with great results. I looked at the SPI website and when I saw Barry painted his wifes 57 T-Bird with HS clear I figured it must be the best.

This is not a good idea and hopefully the shop will refuse.

Voc compliant clears do not have to be inferior however Southern California has made it that way.
When the law was first passed none of the clears worked and that started the problem and now the market in south CA demands a low cost clear over any quality at all.
This is why when visiting shops from Texas east were seeing more and more rods being shipped from CA to different states.

I try to avoid at all costs to advertise my company here but would like to say this. My 2.1 for southern CA has been cheapened twice because of *****ing about cost. Is it a good clear? Yes, its still a very good clear but I have decided to walk away from the S.CA market instead of lowering the costs anymore. Still make it and sell 500-1000 gallons a month, don't care if I sell the 2.1 or not and my only regret is it has the HS on the label and believe me it is no longer nothing like the HS.

Thanks, I vented. Now the shop you pick out will know what clear works best for them, so let them decide as they are responsible for the job anyway.

barry i agree with you totally,if i was to do a show car i would definatly ship it out to another state, i talked to the painter about painting with a higher voc clear, he said he would do it but not at his shop and risk the pentalities. i just decided to have him spray a complant clear so he dosnt have to worry about gov./state issues

I had a feeling the shop would not do it. You guys are lucky for now that you don't have to worry about this voc restrictions I face often. But its a matter of time before its imposed on everone. The Los Angeles area is the or one of the most strictly enforced areas in the nation. We have to use compliant gun cleaning solvent (thinner) most wax & grease removers have been banned, only those in a spray can are legal. The same product that is non compliant is legal if its in a rattle can. You go to your paint store to buy your favorite product only to find out its been pulled off the shelves because it no longer compliant. I have to keep a log of all the products I use and the amounts I use every day and all products have to be labeled and have the msds sheets to prove they're 2.1 voc. But I can't say that the clears are not as good as the say 4.2 voc clears. All the big paint manufacturers make these 2.1 voc clears and some are very good I heard even HOK has one too. HOK says two coats of their HS clear equals four coats of non HS clear. Like Barry said let the shop decide the clear they know what works best.

Yup, A lot of guys will hide stuff in their shop and use it on special projects. But when it comes to doing a paint job for someone and they're not making that much money its not worth it. And most co. won't ship a non compliant product to Cal anyways so its hard to get those products. And you're right about those restrictions L.A. is the hub for all major cities as fare as laws are concerned unfortunately. So its just a matter of time like every thing else, Gasoline here has additives for lower emissions which means more $$. Don't worry it will come to you soon too, if its not there yet. sorry to bum you out but thats the way it is. I see in the very near future here we will see water base only paints like Auto Color.

Here it is bro, the prices are the first one at the top of the page... Make sure when you read this stuff you are not confusing voc with mix ratio... It can play tricks on the mind.. http://southernpolyurethanes.com/Pricing%20Info.htm

That SW clear is very good stuff, You'll like it. I like it but for every day spot jobs I don't need it. It's good think too because its expensive.
As fare as us living here in L.A. County not only do we deal with all the restrictions but we get to deal with, higher gas prices, higher taxes, higher ins., higher housing, the worts traffic and the smog that comes with it. Ahhh don't you just love it.
