50 mercury issue

hi everyone,

got a question on a 50 mercury front suspension. what options are there? anyone did a frame graft? what suspension/brake setup would one use? got a friend that just picked up a 50 mercury. his dream car, but it don't stop too good. i'm trying to help him find an affordable brake solution that might work on his car. being that he just chunked down a nice sum on the car, funds are a little low at the moment. he's planning to drive it, while restoring it, but want's it safe enough to drive.

i found this 2 year old post, but it's kind of open ended.
49 merc front suspension upgrade
as well as this one from last month that talks about the unfortunate situation that jamco had. i hope the best for the family.
Jamco Suspension

i also found this in the forums, but will need more time to go through it:
http://www.shoeboxford.com/
so i'm looking for any other gearheads out there with other solutions that might help. seen a frame on ebay with a GM suspension front and rear, but it's not feasible to have that shipped here. so if i can get a simular setup and do the welding here, we'd be game.

thanks, JD

Have you checked with the Fatman? www.fatmanfab.com You can get a front crossmember from him to fit your car, it has Mustang 2 type suspension and disc brakes...no need to graft on another frame. Then you could put a Ford 9 inch under the back with either drum or disc brakes.

About 20 years ago a friend used a Firebird sub fame in his mild custom 50 Merc convertible. Worked well then. I am sure that there are many more options now.

something like a late 70's early 80's frame? or older. because i have a 70 nova subframe i was holding just incase i come across a nova or camaro that someone was getting rid of, but then again it would be good to donate to the cause.

I had a rear steer Nova subframe under my 51 merc. it fit great and worked great.
It takes a little bit of careful trimming to get it lined up but the Nova/Camaro subframe will slip between the Merc rails and the back end of the subframe rails will tie into the X member of the frame.
I don't have any digital photos of it as it was done around 1982 or 82 but I will dig and see if I can find some

You can run the stock Merc core support and radiator with this setup. The core support sits on the small forward crossmember of the subframe and a few spacers will align the sheetmetal.

I won't go into a long explanation but if you want more info drop me a pm and I'll send more info.
