Post 502 crate motor starter

Installed a 502 crate motor in a 71 chevelle that orignally came with a 6 cylinder. Can't get the high torque starter to engage with the flywheel. This starter has 2 large posts and one small post. Have a 10 or 12 guage purple wire that is running through the firewall via the wiring harness and a small yellow wire that was previously connected to the positive side of the coil. The 502 comes with an HEI, so which posts do the purple and yellow wires connect to on the starter, and where does the other end of the yellow wire get connected? Also, if you're getting 12 volts at the hot wire going to the HEI distributor, there in no reason to change the wire for a heavier guage, right?
