Trying to figure out the proper term for something I saw awhile back on a 50's Mercury...On the factory antenna located at the base was sort of an add on bracket the had an extended base and on that base another rod that had red ufo shaped coils stacked up on it...Looked like some sort of funky antenna booster...trying to find out just exactly what those things were and the proper name?
Thanks!
1) More antenna; the signal is simply energizing the length of wire that is the antenna straight or coiled. Longer begets a higher voltage being formed at the antenna.
2) An RF preamp ahead of the radio to boost the signal strength before injecting into the radio.
Of course either of these take whatever vibes are in the ether and pump 'em up. Some may be distortions and junk you really don't want to hear now you need filters and traps to clean the signal up.
Not really trying to boost signal or anything..just saw those ufo things and wondered who made it? I assume its got to be for signal..or snake oil 50's doodad...
Wow, that thing looks like a classic JC Whitney option. If it were a loading coil for an antenna, it would be mounted in series with the antenna. I would save it for the entertainment value.
