What you have is called a " enclosed driveline "
The driveshaft runs inside the Big Tube. Fords quit this same setup in the 1949 Ford passenger vehicles. A new open rear end will require another transmission also. Back in the day ... 55 - 56 - 57 Chevrolets were the best parts donor cars. The rear ends were the correct width and the manual transmissions would bolt up ... I suggest you finding a older repair manual ... for the detailed description on removal ... They are available on eBay for twenty dollars and has all kinds of information on your 51 in it. |
