The steering on my 51 ford has busted a coupple of times. we have welded the steering box back into place. but the welds have broke 2x and then welded in place it looks like the frame somewhat twists. what is the best thing to do for all of this.. I will be takeing out the flathead v8 soon and the front fenders so i will be able to work on everything. all advise is needed

The first thing you need to look at is why the steering is breaking and fix that problem.

Welding the steering box in place is not a good idea. First of all the box is cast and will crack if not welded correctly (preheating before welding). This preheating will more than likely distort the box and ruin the bearings inside.

You mentioned a twisting of the frame. This was probably caused by a wreck and not by the welding of the steering box. The flathead never had enough power to twist the frame of your '51.

re: 51 ford frontend

the car was never in a wreck. the frame only twists a small amount as the stearing is turned. but soon it will be all taken apart and rebuilt

re: 51 ford frontend

If she's coming apart, maybe box the rail at the mounting point? Are the pins frozen causing the rail to bend?

There is a kit to rid it of the pins and go to ball joints.
