common heads on a 305. when used on larger small blocks, the small valve restricts breathing, if you had the 1.94 valves installed it would flow less due to the shrouding in the small chamber. These heads were designed for high velocity, small engines like the 305 need it to have decent low end torque.
When these heads are used on a 350, it`ll have explosive out of the hole power, but it`ll run out of breath at 3500 rpm.

How?

how can anyone put 14022601 heads on a 350? They have 53 cc chambers. With flat tops they may come out like 12:1. Might work on the track, but not on pump gas

I think you mean had them shaved 0.010". lol

Anyway, the performance (or lack of it) you describe sounds more like a set of TALL rear gears, like in the low 2's.

Properly worked, the 601 heads should be on par w/the 416 heads that are often mentioned.

They are similar to the 416's but have a tighter/smaller combustion chamber that shrouds the valves more. Needs lots of porting and chamber relieving around the valves to get the flow up. Especially when bigger valeves are installed. The 53c chamber will be bigger when you are done all that. A good head (among others) to learn on for a budget project for the DIY 'er. 283-305-307-327ci up to 350. If you had the4 uncontrolable urge to go nuts on a 267, this would be the head to use.
The benefit being having a small combustion chamber to creatively rework for a decent finished cr for low $$$.
