That is exactly the problem with templates. I agree. I remember John Glover saying, "the Wheel and Planishing hammer only stretch. The secret is to keep raising the low areas until the high spots touch." That may be an over simplification but basically is what you do. If you over stretch an area the only thing you can do is raise the low area around it until it is no longer a high spot. That! can be a big job.

I hope you post lots of pics when you do the hood. I know it may be a long way off but i'll bet there will be a lot for the rest of us to learn. Ron Covell, I think it was, made the video on making a 36 Ford fender and he spent as much time making the buck as he did the fender. The buck itself was a work of art.

Without the buck, it would take longer than the time involved making the buck and making the fender.

I just didn't realize this when I started. I wish someone had drilled this into my skull before I began the front of my car.

Bah, you still wouldn't have listened. You know how we motorheads are, we have to try it "our way" first and then maybe admit someone else had a good idea and try that...

The sad thing is for most of us, building these old cars has been a life long learning process. By the time we begin to be pretty comfortable with our abilities we are too old and decrepit to do it. How I would have loved to have access to the training and inexpensive tools when I was a young man. They can learn to do things the first time that we learned by repeated trial and error. (lots of error).

With every project you do learn and continue to get more skilled. That in itself is very satisfying.

I accepted a deposit on the driveline out of the convertible as well as the engine and trans out of the hardtop.

The last few days have been hectic around here but I did pull the rear cover off the rear. It looks great. I think the buyer is getting a true 51,000 mile rear end with a 3:55 gear. I have the engine and trans unbolted and almost ready to come out.

I did want to have the body shimmed and bolted down tight before I take the weight of the engine and cast iron powerglide off the frame. I have the LH side bolted tight as well as having the convertible support plates ready to weld on the LH side. Hopefully I can get the other side tomorrow and remove the chains that have been supporting it from the ceiling. Actually 3 of the 4 are no longer supporting any weight now.

I don't know what happened to the picture of the welded in RH quarter panel but will repost it. This gives me the strength I needed to shim the body as I stated I was doing above.

Just a small update. I finished welding in the RH quarter panel today as well as finishing up both ends of the tail pan. As I mentioned earlier the car is now sitting on it's new body mounts. There is lots of welding and grinding to be done yet.

If it is alright I will update once in a while with a progress report but be warned. There won't be much to report on that will be very exciting for a while. Lots of grunt work to do.

Amazing to see where the '53 is at today, vs. where it started out! I would have looked at it and told myself it can't be saved. Truly a work of art and craftsmanship!
