re: 53 chevy pickup rear window

It's a pinch welt which is used to "lock" the glass in place. There is a tool which will make it a bit easier but you can still do it if you take your time and use a philips screwdriver to open the pocket and carefully push the pinch welt in.

Good luck.

re: 53 chevy pickup rear window

The biggest trick to putting any rubber parts in is to warm it in a bucket of hot water. There is another product that has been discontiuned that works like magic, 3M "Release agent". There is NOTHING on the market that works as good as this stuff on installing rubber parts. It is a shame they have discontiued it. I had the darn number and now I can't find it on my messy desk, crap. Anyway, it is a white aerosol can, check the shelves at the parts store in town, there are cans around. Buy every can they have if they have any. I am not kidding you, if there is a bunch I will buy them off you.

re: 53 chevy pickup rear window

I've been using something that doesn't work quite as well, but has the advantage of being friendly to most surfaces. Fill a spray bottle mostly with water, then put a capful or more of your favorite car wash soap into it, until it's nice and sudsy and slippery. Plus, if your glass is put in the way I think it is, the tool is probably worth getting. I'm not a glass guy per se, but I do know those locking strips can be a real pain depending on the model.
