53 chevy rear brakes

does the drums come off on this car or do i have to pull the axle... 53 chevy 4door bel-air. this car has been sitting for the past 25 years. it's been brake day here in KS... thanks

The drums are supposed to come off. But, after all the years of setting, you are better off time wise. If you take a torch and literally cut the drums off.

I had the same problem with a 54 Bel Air. Rolled it home. Put it in storage, in line with the rest of the future projects. 20+ years later I sell it to a friend. It took us two days of beating, prying, cussing and finally I cut the drums off just so we could roll the car out to load on the hauler..

just be aware there not cheap drums to replace. you can get them through www.chevsofthe40s.com

a cheaper way to remove the drums would be to cut the nails off the backing plate, they should come right off, with the shoes in them.
