53cc heads on 355?

I bought a 305 from a buddy out of a 82 k5 blazer. turns out, it has the 53cc heads. the 601 casting.
I know they have 1.84-1.5 valves, and flow like 165 cfm at .050".
But, im trying to figure a way to utilize all the parts, and make something out of them. If i use the 305 block, i'll probably do some other head on it, but it'll be 3 projects down the road.

Im tossing the idea of a high compression 355, with flat tops, 53cc heads, and a .500 lift cam, 750 carb, high rise intake. Does this sound like a 700 lb grenade, or a feasable build?
not sure what i'd use it on, but its an idear. I may put it in my truck after i build it to its jacked up build, or i may use it in another strip car.

Plausable, or busted?

To me sounds like a cool build, I would try using the 62cc Vortec heads, and just have them machined for more lift and a victor jr intake manifold, sounds like the same build as mine, what CR are u looking for? What are you plaining on doing with this build?

In stock form the only thing the 601's have going for them is the small high compression combustion chamber.

The 601 chamber volume is actually a bit too small in stock form, for a 350.
(not all the 601's check at 53cc )

But:

You can and should want to improve them before bolting them on if you want
the full effect of this popular head swap.

if you were to fully home port them and deshroud the small chamber for larger 1.94x 1.60 valves, the heads will flow a lot lot more air and the chambers end up being 58 to 62cc when finished for the larger 1.94x 1.60 valves.

When you do this, they work very well on 350's and the cr will not be excessive.

If you just bolt them on stock, don't expect much.

Its when you home port them and rework the chamber "deshroud" for the larger valves that they rock on 350's.

They need generous complete effort porting. Don't be shy. Use a felrpo 1205 gasket as a guide. its not rocket science. but is time consuming.
The meat and potatoes is deep in the port. A half baked effort gets you a half baked result.

Do not use 2.02 valves. If they are going on a 305, use a 1.84 x 1.50 or 1.94 x 1.50 valve set.

230++ cfm in and 180+ cfm ex flow is well within reach by porting w 1.94x 1.60 valves on these heads. Filling in the twined center exhaust EGR passages helps too.

if you are willing to do the work, they turn out very nice.

If you are building a high rever , but its not going in a truck try a Isky solid Z-27 cam #201027 loves gears, rpm and a 3500+ stall.

f-bird, sounds great, thanks for all the info.
I've had a little experience watching a couple P&P jobs, and a few valve jobs, so we'll see where to go from there.

and, Phil, I have a set of vortecs, but i kinda traded them with my dad for a 88 dodge dakota. I traded him my 84 Camaro and all the goodies to go with it.

I was planning to drop a 383 from one of my buddies that he already built from his 73 Road Runne into the Dakota
But, if i decide to do this 350, i need a good vehicle to drop it in. the junkyard beside the house has a 71 Monte Carlo, my absolute FAVORITE 70's car, closely tied with the 78 z28 camaro.
If I can the Monte off the old man, it'll go in that.
If not, its just a mental build and stored in the shed til I find out what to put it in.
