54 Chevy Truck Project - Progress Update
Thought I would share some of the progress I have made recently on my truck project. I placed some pictures in my gallery here but the following link includes all the pics.
http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery...rname=houston54 Current challenges include drive shaft fabrication (farm out), rear e-brake cables (Lokar or modified GM), and exhaust system installation. Once these items are checked off it will be time for final priming, blocking and color. It sure is easy to take these things apart but putting them back together can be interesting. One area that I am needing information/pictures is of the throttle linkage hookup for an edelbrock performer (600cfm). I have a standard GM pedal assembly I plan to use unless another/better solution is provided. |

throttle linkage
First let me say you have raised the dead. I looked at some of your pictures and you have come a long way in making a very nice truck. I have a 50 that was much the same but it was covered in primer. I have a 350 in mine with the edelbrock 600 and had the same problem. I went with a mechanical linkage, I just like that look of the throttle movement. You may not want to go that way but I got the linkage out of a 58 chevy pick up and used the paddle from a 55-57 car. I know it would be easier with the cable. If you used the mach. linkage you have to modify the flat bracket that goes under the hood and use himm joints to connect it to the carb using a stainless steele rod threaded on both ends. Its a lot of trouble but it was worth it to me, it looks good and works great. I wish I had some pic to send to you to help, don't have a dig. camera. Good luck on the project, your first drive makes it all worth while. If you don't mind, whats that fuel tank out of ? Mine is still behind the seat and I would sure love to change that real soon.

Glad you like the progress to date. There have been many starts, retreats, reworks, etc that sometimes I have questioned my sanity in doing this project but it has given my son and I a great opportunity to do something together. I am hoping to start a journal of the efforts to date soon.
The carb linkage is probably simple but I have nothing for a go-by as yet and none of the old bracketry from the SBC to try to kluge something from. The tank is for a 68 camaro. From what I can tell the 67-69 are the same. The sending units differed in that some had 5/16 single lines, 3/8 single line or 3/8 witha 5/16 return/vent line. The capacity is 18 gal. The straps were bent up using 1.25 wide x 3/16 stock obtained at the Home Depot. I have tried to keep from using any of the so called "aftermarket solutions" for the basis and instead tried to use parts from donor vehicles. Adds a bit to the challenge to make something new from something old. Just have to make sure what is used is functional and safe. I have quite a pile of swap meet fodder from items I thought I could use but decided not to. The junk has been tossed tough. If anyone sees something missing or has been down this road before and can call out any gotchas I have not come across yet please call them out. |

I don't know if you have made a decision on your gauges (I noticed the caption on one of your pics). I've been considering Dophin Gauges. After looking at Alan Horvath's site and talking to the Dophine folks, that's probably the route I'll take. They seem to be the only one's that have gauges big enough to fit in our dashes. One difference is that I want (from Alan's setup) is the big speedo AND the big tach. The other gauges....I may mount them in dash...got a ways to go before I decide. Great job on the pics! Jon |

Autoloc now has the pinstriped guages. they look good, but are only available in 2 1/16. I know they are available with a white background. They do have a speedo, (3-4" I think) with the same pinstripe pattern.

Alan does have a good site. He has done a good job updating his truck. I have been looking at the new guages offered by TPI and think that is the way to go. I am not ready for them yet though. Classic Instruments, Dolphin, Autometer, and others offer 5" quads and speedos. I am not too concerned about a tach though. If it were a manual trans I would probably add one. Bt the time I am ready there will probably be something new and slick on the market that will give me everything.
We hung the front sheet metal this weekend to confirm the fit. Will probably do a full assembly to confirm all the parts can still be found and that everything fits right before final paint. It will also be easier to primer and block with the fenders hung on the truck. |

I'm still a way off on the gauges also. I talked to someone at Autotech last year, at that time they didn't have anything in a 5". Glad to hear that they do now...I liked their antique look gauges.

Also would like to get a wiring diagram/advice for a general SBC install. Two wire alternator. One question I have is on the batter hookup. Should I run a ground to the frame or to the engine? Should I run a ground strap from the engine to the frame? Where would be a good point to secure a ground strap to the block? |

Got busy again last weekend and was able to mount the power brake booster and master cylinder, install the grill (looks much better with a nose on it) and shaved the bumper bolts before installing the bumper and splash apron (much cleaner look).

It is a 24mm bore. Can I get a metal MC with that same bore/throat diameter? I also need pictures of throttle/kickdown linkage hook-ups for SBC running Edelbrock mixer. If you can take a couple of shots of your install and send them to me I would appreciate it. |

This past weekend's project was to complete the rear brakes and install a e-brake cable between the original parking brake pedal assembly and the 10 bolt differential form a 1977 Trans Am.
