Thanks for the pics Cole but kentucky is quite a trip from Ga.after seeing that grill on the 55 GMC
I'm kinda looking for a 55 GMC step side (or at least a grill) about that shape that I can chop, cut and rebuild Maybee a 57 hood....I'm keeping my eyes open ...I've still got a little time I just brought the plymouth to the shop to to completely tear down and paint....I've been collecting parts for the truck and have the complete drive train and front end all I need is the body....

WOW , that guy is nuts !!!!!!!!!! Honestly Cole I wouldn't drag that truck home even if it was free, there is not enough of it left to work with. Take your time and keep looking , find a better truck. Spend a little more money for a complete pickup one you can drive home.

Greetings all!
After reading all 147 pages I'm ready to enter the fray.
I purchased a 1956 small window SWB truck a few months ago. It was a factory 265 / 4 speed but now has a '58 283. It had been an ongoing 5 year project for the PO, but a move across country forced the sale. Since then I have replaced the wiring with an EZ wiring universal kit, swapped the SM420 trans for a T5, cut an 80's caprice drive shaft down to size, alternator, and installed a heat/air unit behind the dash(heat only for now).
Truck was painted with JD blitz black and red painted steel wheels. I don't have any decent pics of it yet but will follow up soon.
I'm keeping the straight axle for now until I figure out what direction I'm going with this thing.
Lots of great info here. Thanks for everything so far.
Cal

welcome to hotrodders. do post pics asap, we're nuts for new projects.
factory 4 spd? is your truck a 3/4 ton?
very cool to keep the 283, the 265 would have been equally cool.
the old 283 didn't have side motor mounts, how did you get the t5 in?

147 pgs? we need a sub-forum... lots of good stuff in this thread

the more i look at that truck, the more i am amazed that it is all together.
with no inner fenders, i wonder how the front end is held on?
core support bolts to inner fenders, they bolt to the fenders.

The truck is a half ton. The T5 is from a mid 80s S10. Bolts to the factory bell. Use an astro van (11'' dia or an S10 9.25'' dia) clutch disc with the factory pres plate and TO bearing.
The '58 has provisions for side mounts but still has the offset holes in the valve covers . I will have to change to side mounts eventually as I have a serpentine belt system (for the AC) off a 4.3 chevy and I need the lower front mounting holes for it.

Well, honestly I have mixed feelings about it. My intentions were to restore it as much as possible even lay a new wood bed, but I really like a clean hotrod. So I installed the MII which added disk brakes to the front, cleaned up a 350 and a 4 speed, added a bed mount fuel tank, shaved the door handles and filler neck, Im working on rewiring the whole truck, smoothing the dash, installing a tilt column. I did restore the original cluster for the dash and that will be reinstalled. I have a new roll pan for the rear which I am installing 4" led taillights in, tailgate with hidden latches and an embossed bowtie in the metal. Oh, and I have the solid piece door window kit to install. And to top it all off I have the hot rod suede (flat black) for paint. I have my hands tied for a long time if I keep at it. Which is the real problem for me, I have 3 kids, one of those jobs that goes home with ya and absolutely no time to work, so it just sits in my garage. Really sucks. I know its paid for and its not hurting anything sitting there, but I was even thinking about selling it.
