Gee did we scare everyone off ???

Anyway Gene sent me a PM and the following week he and His wife took a road trip up here and picked up the castings.

Then we went to lunch at the Whales Tail at Shasta Lake over looking the lake and the I-5 Pit River Bridge.
Thanks again Gene for lunch.

We had a great time meeting and discussing our projects.

So guys whats happening with your projects ?

Glen

55-56 versus 57 chevy or gmc front fenders

hey, don't mean to change ideas here midstream but, does anybody know the difference between the 55-56 front fenders and the 57 front fenders? in the parts catalogues they are always different but nobody in the parts dept has any idea what the difference is other than a different number. it makes a big difference if you are trying to source some goods used parts though.

Here's some pretty good pics of both that you can enlarge and compare. Maybe this will help you?

55-57 Chevy & GMC front fenders

The only difference is the GMC has a hole to the outside of the turn signal location for the grill bar mount.

The only difference in the Chevy is a small indent in the area that surrounds the grill. The 57 grill has a mounting hole here, while the 55-6 doesn't have this. The upper and lower panels also have several of these indentations.

The GMC has holes for the turn signal.

Also, they all have different emblem holes

thanks for the help guys. so, do you think a 55-56 fender will work on my 57 gmc without modifying anything and using the original style grille parts? i will be spotting some emblem holes closed anyway so that part doesn't really matter to me. I am up for some mods but don't want to spend a bunch of time farting around.
on another topic, does anybody have the dimensions from the rear axle centre line to the front, and rear of a stock shortbox bed? or even the length of a stock shortbox bed? I have checked a few websites and none of them that I have found have any actual measurements for overall length or axle centre line to front etc. any help would be appreciated.

every 55-59 truck builder should have a factory assembly manual, it is an invaluable resource. i used it quite often even with all my customizing. they're cheap too.

that said: there are many truck frames. unless we know the truck you have it would be difficult to toss out a number. 3100? my book isn't here right now, i'll try to get it and post a pic.

fender braces?

i have all the fender braces sitting in a pile on my workbench. you know, the rods that go from the fender wheel opening lip to the frame or inner fender. most of them will not go back on due to lowering of the truck. also becuase the frame is boxed and all holes welded closed, i'd need to use a self tapping bolt in the frame. i've put maybe 10,000 miles on it this way. does anyone put them on?

You can not use the 55-6 fender for the 57 grill because the ends of the grill have a necessary mounting bracket that needs the indentation on the 57 fender, unless you delete the bracket, which will leave the grill ends loose and they will likely crack at the points that they attach to the rest of the grill.

Do you have the 57 grill handy where you can look at the backside of the outer ring? If so, you can see what I'm talking about.

I had to put a couple of fender braces back on my truck because the rear fenders started to crack. Both fenders on the back at the bottom where they bolt near the bottom of the bed. I still have a bucket full of braces from 2 trucks maybe someday i'll put them back on ( maybe they will stop some rattles)

Hey Plaid
I don't mean to be argumentative but my 57 has 56 front fenders and I put my 57 grille in to see what I had to cut to get it to fit and it bolted in without cutting anything out of the grill or cutting notches in the fenders for the outer grill bolts.

I may have missed something. My post about grills applies to Chevrolet pickups , don't know anything about GMC's
