He drove 5 mph back home and parked it,it has never been driven since. Has this happened to anyone else? Jim

Jim,
I don't think a straight axle is any less safe than an IFS if it is serviced and maintained. I think running 90 miles an hour in any vehicle is a calculated risk and there are lots of things that can go wrong but I would have to say that there had to be an unattended problem with the straight axle at the time of the malfunction. Any given component can be unsafe under certain circumstances. I think that if you aren't comfortable with the straight axle for any reason, that's reason enough to go for something else but I don't have any issues with the safety of a straight axle and honestly have never heard of any concerns over safety concerning a straight axle.

The only reason I took my lights down was because they were on the truck and I needed to work on it.

Finally took the ford 9" rear axles out the back of my truck after giving them a weeks tour of the town. I posted some pics of them in my journal. It doesn't look like much but it is. The gears are the ones I wanted, the width is within 1" of stock and it's a ford 9" . So I can add this to my list of to do's for the truck. The guy who sold it to me was a great guy. I wrote some about him in my journal. If you are looking for an axle this guy might be able to help you. When the time comes I'm gonna need help on how to set the pinon angle.

I don't think I'm going to even try to get into the rear gears. May have it done. Pulled her out today and got an idea of how she is going to sit. Think it will be just right when I get the engine back in. More pics in the journal. Took the glove box door in today to try and get a paint match. Don't know what the paint is. May do a post and see if anyone knows anything that might match from the factory. It is a yellow with a very small greenish silver metal flake in it.

But they forgot to send instructions Gotta call em back tomarrow and get some sent to me. I went to a fab shop for some 1/8in metal and they were closed i will have to go get some tomarrow and get that crossmember welded in by next week hopfully. I only paid 327 for the crossmember shipped to my door. I have been looking on ebay and you can peice together a MI2 for arround 1000. well that is all for now!

Hey Streamline
Are you going to use stock Mustang 2 / Pinto front end parts or are you going to upgrade ? I have a Fatman Fabrications MII front end in my 57 pickup.

suspension stuff

still pondering front clip -vs- straight axle. some random thoughts.
has anyone ever considered, seen or thought about a shackle reversal on their truck like the jeep guys do. move main spring eye to the front and shackles to the rear. supposed to keep hitting bumps or pot holes from jarring the teeth out. down side i understand is that it can "squat" when hit brakes hard. i have thought about doing the conversion and actually using 2 1/2" jeep wrangler springs with some leaves removed. i am gonna measure spring length and thickness and see if close. the SRS brand stubby brackets would be fairly easy to adapt to our frames. would also give more modern and cheaper spring eye and shackle attachments.
i'd have to look at the axle attachment plate and see if adaptable to the straight axle.
anywho - just some random thoughts. let me know what you think!
