55 chev pick-up, install 5 speed behind 350?
i would like to install a 5 speed transmision in my v-8 (350) truck. i am interested in a used t5. i am told one out of s-10 will work. but don,t know wich year or engine size to look for in a donor truck. need help.

You're partly correct. You can use a T5 from an S10, but what they should have told you is you'll need to get a V8 camaro gearset and install that in your S10 T5 donor. This allows the S10's optimal shifter location for a pick up truck; along with the ability to use the cable operated speedo instead of a VSS; and you get the proper ratio for a V8 vehicle with something around a 3.42 or 3.55 rear gear.

Dave Reed (reed0380 on here) builds a lot of these "hybrid" S10/V8 camaro T5's and he'll also sell you the parts. I believe a new one is in the 1200 dollar range from him and others, compare that to the 2000-2500 for a new TKO or ultra-wide ratio 4spd.

I currently have an S10 T5 in my 56 pickup. It's a great street trans, but be easy on it. It wont take much abuse.

Did the same t5 swap into my dads 50 chevy 3100 with a 355. It worked out great. Basically just as AutoGear spoke of. Great info from him. Could've used that info years ago myself, but we worked our way through it. won't take a whole lot of abuse, but it is a great fit and works fine under normal driving conditions, with the occassional "burst" of fun.

the 4.3 used a nv 2500 wich are expensive and weak the t 5 is cheaper but if u go manual swap a t56 from a lt1 camaro or f bird

A little 6 speed would be cool too...I wonder if you,d have to relocate the shifter for an old 55 though??? Shifter may sit way forward in the cab...wouldn't want to reach down by the gas pedal to shift it...LOL

I'd skip past the t5.. you'll break it.. g.m. didn't put them behind 350's for a reason..
torque is that reason..
a t56 or a tremic..
most shifters are to short, so you'll be fab'n up a longer one, and can bend it. to get it in the correct spot for your
my dads 84 f-250 stick had a "s" in the shifter handle shaft.. that got the shifter towards the driver..
only way I'd put a t5 behind a 350, is if I knew I'd never get on it..
ft lb's(torque) and a heavy truck will not be kind to it..

If you're going to run a street tire and drive the truck; its fine. If you want to do burnouts, you'll kill it in a hurry. Modern 'rail shifted' manuals don't have the ability to shift as fast as a side shifted box (like a T10, Muncie, Toploader or 833/ 833OD). If you overshift it; it will bite you in the wallet. Tremec is really pushing to get past both the TKO and the T5; prices are going up for the OEM parts, and availability is going down. They'll be around longer than we will in some variation, because there isn't much choice LOL but you'll pay for it.

Go with the T5 if you've got street tires and a stock style clutch and you're looking to cruise. If you're going to be heavy handed; either get an ultra wide ratio 4 spd, a Doug Nash (Richmond 5 Spd) or a TKO. If youre doing a T56 swap; please do your homework on what you're going to use. You should probably get a 2.97 1st gear LT1 powered T56; but make sure you get the clutch release fork, the slave cylinder and the bracket to hold the Slave on the side of the trans with the donor. These parts are getting hard to find.
