55 chevy front end
How hard or what is the proses of taking the steering linkage off. I don't know the name. I wont to take the bar off that attaches the steering to the front wheels. It has 3 points. I need to drop my oil pan. Is it splined or just slid on.

If your talking about the drag link it is not splined, but it's tapered. Undo the cotter pins, nuts and it should drop off with a little persuasion from a hammer. Do not beat on the treads though.

ok drag link
Yes drag link, sounds good. Do you think it will be hard to put back on what do you think the torque is? Thanks. It does not sound as bab as I thought.

The studs are machined on a taper to match the taper in the boss where they bolt up to provide an interference fit. Hold a big hammer on one side of the boss and smack the other side of the boss with another big hammer. This will usually free up the stud and it'll just drop out of the boss.
Just for explanation, the taper is different component to component and car to car and is based on "X" number of inches of taper per foot. ie: 1" per ft, 1 1/2" per ft., etc. Hot rodders who are unaware of this can mismatch components and create havoc. |
