55 Chevy padded dash

I've seen some really nice examples of fabric/leather/synthetic leather etc., covered dashes esp. on tri-5 Chevys. They look great but what are the drawbacks? Given the known effects that a hot sun has on plastics, I wonder how synthetics would stand up. What about leather? Anyone know how difficult the process is? Should the average upholsterer know how to do this? I want to get away from the "just glue on the insert" routine and paint is not the answer for me. I had some stainless inserts made and then engine turned for use just in case....But I want to be sure to explore all options. I've filled in all the holes in the dash except the instrument and speaker cluster so I have a clean sheet of paper to work with. Ideas appreciated.

Personally I would not put a padded dash on a classic 55 Chevy. IMO it just looks plain cheesy.

Yes, an upholsterer should be able to fabricate anything you want. First you have to define what you mean by a padded dash. Are you including the instrument panel or just up on top? You could use anything on it as long as you don't let it sit in the sun uncovered. Leather would look great, but would dry out in a heartbeat up there. Vinyl (like Naugahyde) also would work, but the best bet may be Ultraleather. This stuff is made from 100% polyurethane instead of poly-vinyl chloride like Naugahyde, and would probably last forever up there. Ultraleather is super soft and supple, but it is a lot more $$$ than regular vinyl.
