'55 chevy truck-want automatic

I'm sure some think this is going in the wrong direction...BUT

I have a '55 Chevy project truck that curently has a 235 Six in it. I'm toy with swapping in a 265-350 V8. I'd like to go automatic while I'm at it. I'm clueless about transmissions. What model am I looking for? Anyone done this?

Thanks,

Keith

just did it again

I always usd a 400 behind all of the engines I put in my 59 apache but on this truck(58 apache) I put a 700r4 behind a 427.I don't know how I ever lived without overdrive.I used a engine crossmember and trans crossmember from brothers trucks. You will have to drill a hole in the trans crossmember were the trans mount bolts to the crossmember(700r4 uses 1 bolt in the middle)and you will need a bracket and linkage for the cable to connect it to the carb.My valve body locks the convertor when it shifts into 4th but they make a kit to control lock up. no computer nessesary. With todays gas prices the overdrive pays for itself .I get 14 mpg at 85mph and my 427 puts out 500+horses.

Anybody done this?? Everybody has done this!!!

You can get every piece you need for this swap and the restoration parts for your truck too from H&H Classic Chevrolet Parts in Bentonville AR. Herman and his son Trey can fix you up with a well-done catalog and great parts at fair prices.
Is your truck a 1st Series (looks like a 54) or a 2nd Series (looks like 56-57)??
This is very simple and relatively inexpensive swap, really good for first-timers with little experience as there is not much fabrication to do.

Hey thanks guys..My truck is a 2nd series. I'll give the 700R4 some thought.
What did you use for a shifter?

Thanks again,

Keith/CT

You might also try a 200r4 tranny, it's a lot like a 700r4 but not as beefy and most likley a lot cheaper.

58 shifter

I used the stock column shift and linkage.I took the little box off the column and used an o/a tourch and romoved the top shift arm from the top bushing. Then I welded the 2 fofks together so the column shifter could not move up or down.I used the straightest linkage to connect to the transmission.I used the top half of the stock 3speed shif arm (I cut it in half)and welded it to the bottom half of the shift arm on the 700r4.At first glance most people think my truck is still 3 on the tree.I like the stock look but i would rather drink cofee than shift a transmission. Most guys just use a 70's tilt culomn and linkages from Locar. If you have a 4speed floor shift Locar makes a nice floor shift that mounts to the auto trans that looks simular to manual floor shift for a nice clean look

DOUBLEDICK, when you say no computer necessary what steps had to be taken to achieve this. I would like to perform the same trany swap in my 66 Nova so the computer is definitely an issue. As for the overdrive, what rear gear are you running and what rev does that put you at going, say 75 mph? I would love to run one of these, I've go a Powerglide in there now and, well you know, the .76 second gear is good for economy but being able to run it up to 75 in first is great for beating people who can't shift their manuals but sucks when the other guy knows what they're doing.

700r4 transmission

I can only answer some of your questions but I think this will help.My trans is set up so that the valvebody locks the convertor when it shifts into 4th gear.I have over 500 hp so I can just put it in drive and go when running empty. When pulling a trailer in vegas I put it in 3rd so it works like a 350 (No 4th gear and the convertor never locks up).I live in Ely NV.(population4000) and dont pull a trailer much so this is not a problem. If I lived in the big city I would have went with the vacume switch that controles the lock up in 4th gear by manifold vacume so I would have 4th gear but the convertor would not lock up at low speeds. There is also a way to set up a toggle switch to control convertor lock up.It just depends on your driving conditions as to which is best.To answer the gear ratio question I do not know what the gear ratio is but I know that it is the stock rearend for a 58 Apache with a strait 6 and a 3 speed trans.I run 31x10.5 tires and get 15 miles to the gallon at 75.I dont know what rpm I am running at but it cant be to high as I run a big block with rectangle port 427 heads and a 750 carb.As for puting a 700r4 in a 66 Nova check out www.transmissioncenter.net They even make the crossmember for your Nova. They are a little overpriced but they have a great on line catolog with pictures of the part.Hope this helps you out .
