56 chev. auto trans. shifter
Hi. Got a question about a shifter I got from a junkyard for my conversion to an auto trans from a standard. Shifter was from an old mustang but I am not sure. It looks like one from 64 mustang? The problem, is the shifter has no detent from reverse to drive, It looks like a detent was never designed into it. Does anyone know if this was common and will it still be alright for my conversion. I can put a detent in it by fabrication. but was wondering if anyone can shed light on this situation. Thanks

Just be sure to match the trans lever, to the shifter lever, center-to-center length, or at least have the geometry correct (1:1, 2:1, etc), then fab up the correct detents for the shifter to match the trans so it works smoothly. I've seen these Mustang/Pinto type floor shifters used for many different installs.
