thanks for your help, I'm pretty much knowledgeless ( is that a word? ) when it comes to transmission stuff. I did notice that one of the bolt ears on the tail shaft assembly is broken off. Is this transmission capeable of handling BB power 400-500 hp. Is it worth rebuilding or should I just go with a turbo 400?

56 chevy 3 speed, what is it?
You seem mixed up? Does your car have a clutch pedal?

I think those cars used the old light-duty Muncie 3-speed, with the 4-bolt side cover and the non-synchronized low gear. Saginaws didn't come along until '66 or so.
Unless somebody changed something on it in the last 50 years. |

I think it is probably the same one that came in the car. If it is the muncie I would guess that it would be buildable to handle bb power. I've never rebuilt a transmission but I have installed a few so this will be a learning experience. What should I look for as far as tolerances on the muncie?
