nice truck,I just bought a 1950 checy but it looks nothing like that. Looks like it's almost finished. I hope to have mine look like yours. So are you going fo the more modder look or are you going to keep it classic.

The problem with the volare is the availabilities of replacement parts..especially where you're located, I would not advice going that route. I emailed you links on a couple of different clip modifications. |

thanks seon. i've ebeen looking into the S10 route. I found one post on streetroding.com (http://www.streetrodding.com/forum/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=6&Topic=92) where an S10 was placed under a '57 chevy. There was a pic. The stance looked good. I've got a friend here who has an S10 in Angeles and wants to do the swap. The S10 has a torsion bar set up perhaps like the Volare. Was asking you guys in the hotrodders forum if they had any info to back up this idea...

re: 56 chevy PU /Suburban clip?
There is a Dodge Dakota conversion that may interest you. It drops the front 2" in stock form and requires no frame cutting. It is listed in Heiht's site. Not sure of that spelling.
I have a 56 Suburban that I will be making into an expedition vehicle of sorts. It will still be 2 wheel drive, but I want to have a long travel independent front suspension, more for ride in the boonies than for speed. Is anyone here aware of anyone doing a project like this? Thanks............................................ ............................Just me |

I have a Dakota set-up in my 57 and I think it's one of the best swaps for a tri five truck. It's the correct width, it's made for a truck, it has big brakes. and it is easy to come by. I used a crossmember from Industrial Chassis (602-278-6800). The crossmember is a little costly but very well made. The Dodge parts (86-96) are cheap and plentiful. This unit will lower a truck about 2 inches from stock but will have a much higher roll center than most other front ends that are being put into these trucks, which means less leaning in turns. I don't think that car suspensions belong in a truck that will be used as a truck. just my 2 cents.

re: 56 chevy PU /Suburban clip?

Thanks for the reply. I went out and found a Dakota yesterday just in case. The thing with this setup that may be a problem with me is that I want to be 4" higher when all is said and done. If you were to picture a 56 Sub that you would explore the desert with that is what I am building. I want at least 10" of suspension travel with soft shock valving set up for two track puttsing. No high speed stuff, that would be too hard on a 50 year old body.[the Subs, not mine!] A rig to haul kayaks and KTM's, and fishing poles. I used to race off-road [CORR] so I have some fabrication skills and some good contacts in that format. If there is a 6" lift available for the Dakota that would make things easy, I'll get ahold of Rick Hussman at Fabtech and see what he can come up with. I've put out a call on the wire for a Dakota R/T rear end, it will have lower gears and disk brakes along with being the right track width. Thanks Again............................................. .........................Just Me |

I went for the low look with 2 inch drop spindles, but I have seen a few raised spindles for the hi-jack guys starting to show up. Spindles for a Dakota are not as popular as the Chevy stuff and you have a limited selection out there. Most of the low volume spindles that I see are a two piece deal, not to say that they are not strong, just not a forged piece. Pay close attention to the metals used in aftermarket spindles, some sellers won't tell you for good reason. Good luck with your burb Richie Z
