The 6 cylinder engine in my '57 wasn't the original block (which I knew), so they added side engine mounts, big ugly ones, to the chassis for the later engine block.

So what's the deal on swapping a small block into a car that originally had a 6 cylinder?

Not a '57, but let's say a later Camaro or Chevelle or something like that. Because if all that's involved is using V8 mounts on the block, then I can bolt my small block into my '57 pretty easily. If I can use these later style side mounts.

Hi,
I don't think I would use what you have there, I'd either
buy an engine swap front mount, or engine swap side mounts
for the 57, also what do you plan for a trans?

The transmission is a full manual Turbo 400.

Well then you'll want to use side mounts, front mounts make it
hard to use a different trans, here is a link for mount conversion

PS you'll also need a larger radiator (more cores) as the six cyl one wont do.

Right, I was planning to use side mounts. What I wanted to know was whether or not the side mounts that are already there will work with a small block. Since the 6 was a later model and used side mounts, the same as if you had a 6 in a Chevelle or Camaro etc., can you use the 6 cylinder mounts to install the small block if you have the right rubber motor mounts? Or, do you have to replace the chassis mounts in cars like that to replace a 6 with a small block?

Because if I could keep the same chassis mounts in those cars with a 6 and just get the right rubber mounts for the block, then I should be able to do the same thing in my '57.

Looks like I found my answer.

These years used non-interlocking engine mounts (aftermarket interlocking replacements are available). The frame halves of these mounts (perches) are made of steel and the engine halves are made of steel/rubber. Both halves of these mounts are specific to the engine (L6, small block V8, or big block V8). Therefore, both halves need to be replaced during an engine swap.

So, since the 6 cylinder engine I removed had steel chassis mounts and steel/rubber engine mounts, I would have to replace my chassis mounts. Which means I have to cut those existing mounts out.
