57 Olds 371 build up

I am building a 57 Olds 371 and was looking for some advice about how to squeeze as much HP out of it for as little $$ as possible. It was an original 4bbl motor that my father had torn apart and rebuilt when he was a kid. It is in incredible shape since he only ever ran the thing on a few different occasions. It has been bored .040 over and I have a 3x2 set up that I was going to use instead of the 4bbl. This is my first rebuild experience and I'd like to get more than the stock 277 HP out of it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

The 1957 and 1958 J-2 Golden Rocket produced 312 hp and 415 ft/lbs of torque with the tri-power carburetor setup. Your 371 with it's four barrel had a 9.25:1 compression ratio and produced 277 hp and 400 ft/lbs of torque. In 58 they had 10:1 compression producing 305 hp and 410 ft/lbs of torque. I don't know for sure but I think if you increase the compression ratio and use the tri-carb manifold you will end up with the 312/415 figures. As well you could try to find a cam for your engine that would give you more horsepower as well. Hopefully Blownolds will see this post as he is very knowledgeable about these engines.
