59 cad wheel bearings

I have a 59 caddy in my shop that has ball bearing type front wheel bearings. we would like to convert these to tapered roller bearings. has anyone gone through this process before. I know that danchuk makes a conversion for tri 5 chevys that includes a hub but the wheel bolt pattern is wrong and I'm not sure that the brake drum backspacing would work. I've looked at a couple of bearing catalogues but it seems that tapered rollers fit in less space than ball type, so the bearing that fits the shaft is too small for the hub. I can make spacers and adapters and stuff here if I have to but I'd rather buy them if they're available .I thank you for any help with this.

Back in the seventies several bearing manufacturers (Green, for one)offered conversions for the BOP cars but I haven't seen one in many years

If you have any industrial bearing suppliers in your area go talk to them. I used to get into what I thought were impossible hub/bearing and spindle combos.

Give them the race OD, the bearing ID, and the total bearing/race width. They can usually come up with something. Even if it is a non automotive application (rollers are different angle, etc.) I have used these with no problem.

thanks

thanks for the info. there are 2 bearing shops within walking distance of my shop and those are my next stop. although the counter help there is not the greatest. anything requiring old school hot rodder innovation gets a response of "heres the catalog -you look it up".I was hoping to save some time . I might try the old napa store too they have alot of oddball stuff.

I put 62 Chevy drums with roller bearings on my 55 Chevy.....slide right on. Maybe, the later Caddies will do the same.

I'm doing a front disc conversion on a 57 Buick right now. Caddy is probably same 5 on 5 bolt pattern as the Buick. Mid 70's van or pickup rotors fit the Buick spindle with standard Napa bearings and seal. They probably will fit your hub and spindle as well.I could get the part #'s later if you need them. Jim

wheel bearing conversion

well , nothing at napa, cpp, or kanter. skf had some bearings that would come close but i'd still have to make spacer bushings.the mom and pop bearing store has some bearings from source in LA that claims to do the job. 356.00 plus tax gets 4 bearings and outer races. I hope they fit.

Kanter's website shows they have them. Did you call them?
They list $275 for front axle kit for 58-59 Caddy, and also list the bearings and seals separately.

Sorry, I guess I didn't realize you wanted to convert to tapered rollers. Nevermind.
