Post 6 volt to 12 volt headlight coversion

I have a 37 Dodge Coupe that I am converting into a street rod. I want to re-wire it with a 12 volt system, but am not sure what to do about the headlights. What it currently has is a 6 volt bulb inside a glass lense. Any suggestions?

You should be able to just change the bulbs from 6 volt to 12 volt bulbs, I did this on an old tractor once. Check at your local parts store and see if you can get some 12 volt bulbs with the same style base on them.

To save later hassels Carefully rip out the old wires and rewire as 12 volt system. Food for thought 42volt systems are coming to the new car industry,it makes sence if you understand the dynamics of electricity. You should be able to find headlite adaptors or complete new buckets you like. This is not such a daunting task, if you don`t know much I`m sure you could find good books onthe subject, the net and this site will be a great help. Just remember everything has to have a "good" ground and solid connections. Go for it. Jerry

re: 6 volt to 12 volt headlight coversion

JBrady,

I converted my 39 Olds from 6v to 12v this past winter. While I think you can just replace the bulb with an equivalent 12v bulb, I converted my headlights to 12v halogen using a conversion kit from RBs for $45.

RBs web site is rbsauto.com. The part number I used was 077-000136. My mechanic did the work and I believe there was a little soldering involved. But it turned out great. Kept everything original except the socket and bulb.

John
