62 Nova Steering box Question.

i recently bought a 62 nova and she wont steer side to side ...i felt like i was going to break some thing in the colmn trying to force it. I then pulled off the steering box and found it was completely locked up. So my question is where and how much can i get a new one ... how hard are they to rebuild ... and what else can i pull one out of that will fit in my car? I have a 72 vega and my buddy told me the steering box should fit out of it.

62 to 66 Nova steering boxes are the same 67 is the first year that had the collapsible column for when you get a accident , you will also need to reuse the pitman arm from the 62 box , I think they are different than 63 to 66.
Some things on a 62 Nova are a one year only then things were improved the next years. My daughter has a 62 Nova , it's been quite a learning experience.

for the pitman arm use a pitman arm puller and for the column take the cross bolt out of the coupler and it should slide off.

I've seen the flaming river columns ... but i was thinking more along the lines of from another vehicle. I only ask because i know some guys with 60's and 70's chevy pickups were using a tilting & telescoping columns out of some 70's - 80's vans.

62 to 66 columns do not come off the steering box , 67 Nova's have a rag joint that will separate the column from the steering box. You need to stick with a small diameter column like the stock one not a fat old thing out of a late model whatever with a key switch on it , that just won't look good

I've seen what your talking about with the box and column not separating .... but then why is it so hard to find one like mine i just keep an eye out on ebay and of all the ones that are listed i only see one or maybe two that have the long shaft that goes in the column?

hey 57halfton, i'm just preparing to drive my 62 nova, and i've run into an issue. i need to replace my steering column because the one currently on the nova, (which i'm not sure if it is even a 62 nova column or not) does not have wiring, or turning signals. i want to replace it with a flaming river 62 nova column, but if the 62-66 box's dont even detach from the column, how do dealers sell columns seperate from the box? and how would i instal the flaming river column if this is true? thanks
