Look carefully for a burned "fusible link". This is an insulated wire of a smaller gage spliced into a wire. It acts as a fuse and will melt before the larger wire is damaged.

Follow the wires from the alternator to where they end, you may have to feel and/or slice the tape or plastic loom off of the wiring harness to see them clearly and to locate any fusible links.

Another thing to check, is to be sure the ground wires are intact and making good contact. There should be a ground cable from the battery, also smaller ground "straps", as they're called, between the firewall and the engine, and from the engine to the fender well sometimes, and sometimes from the battery terminal at the battery to the fender well.

Let us know.

chev dis charging

Well if it shows discharge, and everything is off, with engine running, you have a short to ground, or the wire from the Alt. To starter is Shorted, I don't think they used a fusible link back then, but I believe they still had a voltage regulator. I would guess that it is bad giving you a discharge reading. Does that have a voltmeter or a ammeter?

They did use fusable links. If it is original it also has an external regulator. You can try running a jumper from the field terminal on the alternator to a 12 volt source to see if the voltage comes up. If it does then you know the alternator is working. It could go as high as 16-18 volts so dont leave it attached.

There are several threads on here about the old external regulated alternators and there wiring
