65 chevy timing trouble

i have got a 350 and i need to know how exactly to set the timing. if i turn the distributer back towards the cab it will idle good but the valve will chatter driving down the road. if i turn it the other way it will idle very poorly but will drive ok. i dont know alot. So detailed help will be much appriciated. it has a crome timing cover. so i bought a timing tab and dont know where to bolt it up. and i appriciate all advice givin. thanks sonny also it is electronic ignition. if that matters.

by chatter I'm assuming pinging.What is the base timing at now? Did you use a timing light? 8 degrees btdc is a good starting point for most small blocks with stock cams.

I would still start there and work your way up to the point it pings and then back off 2 degrees this will be a good ball park.
