65 GTO body panels

Hi, I am starting to restore a 1965 GTO and have moderate rust on the lower rear quarters and the wheel openings. Should I try to salvage the old quarterpanels and just replace the rusted metal or am I better of replacing the entire panel. I see replacement panels from several companys. Goodmark, Year one etc. Are there differences in quality of these parts. Thanks GTOFAN

panel replacement

There is absolutly nothing wrong with just fixing the rusted areas. And yes there are differences in companies as far as fit and finish, goodmark, is one i don't care for much, not horrible, but more fitting, and i come across at times, i have to return a panel for another one cause the stamping is not as crisp. I do not know who makes year one's panels. I like rustrepair.com and original parts group just to name a few.

I believe all the repop quarter panels come from the same Taiwan plant. They just vary in quality from week to week. Try to save as much of the original sheet metal as possible. The edges and lines are crisper and look better. Like Diety MS said, it takes a lot of fitting to make the repops fit right. I put full quarters on both sides and the lines aren't as crisp as original plus it takes a lot of sanding and blocking to get them straight. Luckily the car is black and it came out OK.

You'll get great advice from the pros on this Forum.

regards

Ron
