Your uncle is correct. I know a guy that had a 65, it did not have it. I believe the only auto was a 2-speed. He also had a 67 with it, the first year it was an option.
Dual Gate was also know as His and Hers shifter. Last edited by 1ownerT; 07-30-2005 at 06:30 PM. |

What are you going to do with the dual gate? I would imagine you already know, but in case you dont. They are pretty hard to come by if it is in good working order.

What does the dual gate do different?

The Dual Gate was made by Hurst. It was also called the "His and Hers". Not sure when they started making them, but they first showed up in the GTO in 1967 when the automatic transmission changed from the Super Turbine 2 speed to the Turbo 400 3 speed. The left side gate was a conventional floor shifter. At the neutral position, you could push the shifter handle to the right side and drop into a parallel gate. The right side was a ratchet style shift gate. By applying slight rightward pressure to the shifter when shifting out of first it would catch at second. Release the rightward pressure and it would be ready to do the same thing going from 2 to 3. There was a sliding cover to conceal the "His" gate.

My uncle was also saying the were some hurst GTO's built, even in '65. I'm also wondering if this is true? He said they had a little hurst emblem on the trunk.
I don't know what I'll do with the shifter if I go stick. It's virtually mint aside from the wood grain is a little faded. Any ideas on what she's worth? My dad still has the th400 that he had built for the car, but lost 2nd. I notice the hidden gate doesn't work with a th350. Thank for your help guys. |

I believe all 65 Hurst GTO's were 4 speed cars.
The Dual Gate should work with a TH350. You will have to come up with some brackets and levers to make sure the detents end up in the correct places. If memory serves, there was a console available for the 64, 65, and 66 auto cars with the floor shifter. But they were all two speeds. Unless you have the numbers matching 389 and tranny, I would put in a 400 (or 455) and a TH400. The 67 and newer engines have better valvetrain geometry. And the Dual Gate is fun to drive. |

How much it is worth depends on the buyer but they are not a dime a dozen. The consoles for the GTO are usually hard to find for the same reason of what you are doing. Most second owners yanked the dual gates out and put in 4 speed. I am not sure of how many his and hers were built, I do know that many Corporate pep cars got dual gates. Dealers sold quite a few to appease the wife during the muscle car era but the street had few survive as the next level buyer/performance guys wanted stick behind the engine. I have seen them go for rediculous money the key is a good working undoctored peice. If the wood grain is the only flaw I have seen them go for as much as $300 with a perfect console I have seen $500+. But as always the buys need and sellers greed decide the price.

If I do remove it I'll likely keep it, I have a thing for collecting old GM stuff.
The car is actually Chevy smallblock powered right now, but I also have a thing for bigbock muscle cars and will likely go 427 chev. I know the poncho faithfull will hate me, but, Anyone know of a good reardisk swap that will fit stock 15" wheels? nothin' fancy just works good. |
