138375Z132568

1=Chevrolet
38=Super Sport
37= 2 door Sport Coupe
Z= Fremont California
The last six is the unit number. All these start with number 1. This particular car was number 32,568 to roll off the line.

What size engine is it supposed to have and can you get the numbers off of the block?

Hope this helps you out.

Kevin

Thanks for decoding the vin for me.
The engine is either a 283 or a 327 but I'm not sure how to tell which one it is because I haven't really been able to get down around the block that much due to a broaken hip. (Some jerk t-boned me and totaled my
71 mach 1. )
Where exactly is the number on the block located?

the car is a super sport when the second and third diget is 38.first diget"1" means chevrolet motor division,the second and third diget means the series,ie:36 would be a malibu [v8].35 would be a malibu 6 cylinder. 38 would be a [malibu] supersport,and so on.this is true for 65 thru 68 chevelles only, [el caminos is a completely different subject].the 4th and 5th shows body style,67=conv.37=sport coupe.your 6th diget is the year,5=1965,the letter after the 5 is a z,this is where the car was assembled,z=fremont calif.the last 6 #'s is the production sequence.66 thru 68 had only big blocks in the supersports,hope that this helps.

well I'm going to get the car! thanks for the help. Does anybody know where the number on the engine block is so that I can figure out if it's a 283 or a 327. The owner isn't really a car guy so he doesn't know what the engine is.

there is a code on a pad on the front of the block,just below the head,[pass. side]would have to scrap it off,I think it would be 2 letters for the earlier motors,also on the back of the motor,behind the head on the block where the trans bolts on,there is a number which is casted into the block,go to mortex.com with the #,and this should tell you what the motor should be,the # could give you maybe 2 different engine sizes.Also,Where in Arizona are you?If you don't get the car,let me know,I am in arizona too.
