66 Chevelle

This weekend I am going to be looking at a 66 Chevelle, it has a 383 with a turbo 400. Besides leaks and rust, could you help me out with some other things to look for, thanks a lot!

Look in trunk for rust near the back wheel wells. Also look at the overall condition on the inside things like the trunk and back seats also the carpet are all good things to look at. It can give you some idea as to how the car was kept. If someone kept it clean then you have a better chance that the overall car is in better shape (NOT ALWAYS!) If the guys know a lot about the car and its history and all te parts he put in or it has in it. Shows that he at least looked into the car himself.

Make sure you look at the floor pans most Chevelles rusted there right under your feet. You can even pull back the carpet if you want a better look at the floor pans and attached parts.

See if the guy can tell you the last time he changed the oil (do this while speaking generally about things not as a direct question.) he should be able to tell you something like o 4 months ago. Then ask him how it looked. Listen very carefully to the engine (not just exhaust sound __tho that is ooo soooo tempting) Listen for clicks pings anything since the engine has had work done to it. You really can't assume he or whoever did it did the best job. Before he starts it. Go up check the oil check the water level. Then check the trans fluid. Look at color and if it is filled correctly (again show how well care was taken care of)

Look for any serious body problems look at all the main cross members see how rusted things are.

Take a ride and one thing that is kinda hard to do is not get so excited as to impair your judgment. Turns into one of those I must have it NOW type things that latter bites ya.

Be honest with yourself if you can do the work needed and how much your willing to put in the car. A healthy engine means you will have more cash for the car. Think about what your looking for and what you can do. Most of all have fun!

Hope this helps.

Chris

take a person who knows what to look for. IF something doesn't seem right with the owners story, don't listen and walk away. There are always other cars, and a lot of crooks. Possibly take a magnet to look for bondo.

So what was the price?

And how was the car...nice...not so nice? I like the 66 Chevelle...I have a 64 and a 65 Chevelle right now but the 66 is sweet too!! Do yourself a favor and don't start collecting cars....concentrate on one car and make it the best you can!!! Just a suggestion from a guy who should know better is all!!!
