I am going to change the rear wheel bearings on my buddies 66 Impala. I am assuming the axles have to come out to change the bearings is that correct? Thanks..

Yes....there are 2 types of axles that GM used. The "full floating "type, you will have to go into the rear end to remove the "C" clips to pull the axles. The other type has pressed on bearings. It has 4 bolts holding it in behind the brakes shoes.
Not sure which type you have.
