66 Mustang Front Suspension Upgrade
I looked at a neat front suspension on a 66 Mustang Fastback today and it was as impressive as pricey. He had previously installed adjustable coil overs, adjustable tubular upper and lower control arms, a serious sway bar, and Wilwood rotors and calipers. Today, he was adding a rack and pinion steering unit to make it a very promising handling package. The rack installation was interesting in that what would normally be the rod ends are solid mounted to the frame rails and a long 1.5" X 7/16" piece is affixed to the R&P barrel and the rod ends are linked to it. When the steering wheel is turned, the barrel portion of the R&P moves, thus turning the wheels. This entire set up is about $3500, but he says the handling improvement is unbelievable. He takes it to a track in the Nashville, Tenn area to stretch his suspension to the limit which is well beyond what any stock suspension can attain.
