66 Mustang Front Suspension Upgrade
 
I looked at a neat front suspension on a 66 Mustang Fastback today and it was as impressive as pricey. He had previously installed adjustable coil overs, adjustable tubular upper and lower control arms, a serious sway bar, and Wilwood rotors and calipers. Today, he was adding a rack and pinion steering unit to make it a very promising handling package. The rack installation was interesting in that what would normally be the rod ends are solid mounted to the frame rails and a long 1.5" X 7/16" piece is affixed to the R&P barrel and the rod ends are linked to it. When the steering wheel is turned, the barrel portion of the R&P moves, thus turning the wheels. This entire set up is about $3500, but he says the handling improvement is unbelievable. He takes it to a track in the Nashville, Tenn area to stretch his suspension to the limit which is well beyond what any stock suspension can attain. If any one is interested, I'll get some pics and more details to post.

Thanks for the PM, that is a nice setup, did the guy tell you where he got it or is this something he made up himself. I love the RandP on it and the shocks look to be adjustable, must be strong springs to support the frontend for handling, arms look good and strong also. Very well setup, if you have some info on where it came from I would like to know. :pimp:

I'll get the straight skinny on every thing. He purchased the suspension parts from one company that was bought out by the company that makes the R&P kit. The guy that owns the Stang restores/builds them for a living and also provides parts for all the local Stang owners at a reasonable price.

Yes, the coil overs are fully adjustable as well as the upper and lower control arms. He drives the car on a road course and has a special alignment that is not conducive to every day driving, like 3 degrees positive toe. On the track, he runs three 20 min periods with an hour in between for adjustments, cooling etc. He is installing 17" wheels around and discs in the rear before returning to the course next month. The R&P is three turns stop to stop but there is a 2.5 turns option.

That is a real interesting set-up. It doesn't look like he had to cut out the original frame members and innerstructure. To me that is a real plus when you can have the engine bay look like it is supposed to.

No cutting required. Everthing used the original holes. There was some early concerns of removing the tubular cross member, but the design of the R&P (which is bolted thru the crossmember mounting holes) serves the same function. This basic set up has been used for quite some time in several road racing classes and has been proven under some extreme conditions. This is the first aftermarket steering/suspension set up I would consider in the early Mustangs. The others just have too many bugs. (You get what you pay for)

That looks like it may be a chev cavalier unit..Maybe? any possibility of finding out.??.Might be a good idea for other front steer apps with a smilar layout to the mustang shown..

That's a TCP suspension parts & rack. I like they way the rack works. I've been reading up on suspensions and one problem in converting a drag link car to r&p is that the tie rod arms aren't designed for r&p and causes some geomtry issues such as unwanted toe in or toe out as the wheels turn while the drag ling stays pretty much a zero toe changes. The way the rack is working here with the straight bar, it's mimmicing the drag link and I'd guess along with zero toe change.

TCP produced the suspension parts, but have been bought out by the R&P producer. I have a call in to my bud to get the skinny on the present source for the set up. You will notice the OEM rod ends and linkage in the pics. After market rod ends are available and he will add them later when his new ones become worn.

It's been a while, but my Bud went on vacation and then took his car back to the track. His front end was a big improvement, but his rear suspension causes a loose condition. He reduced air pressure a couple of times with some improvement, but he is going to have to do some shock/spring rate tuning to get a more neutral handling car.

TCP was bought out by Chris Alston Chassis.

im pretty sad that my 1970 stang had the front end chopped off for a frame rail setup.. Yah it's lighter, but this suspension would be way nicer than a mustang II i think.

Not to mention, the custom frame in it now doesn't let me install this:
