66 mustang hurst shifter.
i realize i need a bit more info but i wanted to throw this out there.

a friend has a 66 mustang with a 4 speed tranny and a hurst shifter the shifter was binding and upon inspection the shims were worn and they went to get a new shifter the speed shop gives them a replacement shifter but the shifter in the car had reverse to the left and back the replacement (same number) has reverse to the right and back. they looked closely at the shifter from the car and it looks like the rods were welded and the configuration was altered

so we need to know what the correct shifter is. and i told them to get the numbers off the tranny. where on the tranny would they be?

so maybe this is common i dont know.

Man, it's been 35 years since I had a Mustang with a 4 speed but iirc, reverse was to the left and forward. You don't want reverse where you could accidentally grab it on a power or speed shift and yes, it can happen! If you can, flip the shift lever on the trans over or get one where you can make it over to the left and forward....even if you have to get a different it. And about nailing reverse....I had a 56 Chevy with a 3 speed and the shifter was hooked up backwards in order to pull 2nd but there was one instance where reverse got pulled. The tires were spinning but the car nosed over. The shift did feel a bit odd and it took a second to figure out what was happening so I shoved the clutch pedal back down. Yup, it was in reverse all right and I can't believe to this day that nothing broke. Maybe something did because I sold the car a few weeks later and the new owner blew the engine within a few days.

Are you trying to restore the car or hot rod it? Mustangs didn't come with Hurst shifters so I figure it's a hot rod? Improve it by putting reverse out of harms way.....and after doing some research, the factory shift (non Hurst) pattern was to the left and back. Mustangs came with top loaders mostly but some came with the T-10...side loader. Don't know if it was a year thing or just an optional deal.

its not my car it belongs to a friend of a friend i don't know anything about standard shifters i never owned a car with one i wasn't aware you could even swap around the reverse position there is a good chance the entire drive train isn't original. the owner just wanted to make sure he was putting the proper parts in the car so it all would work correctly.

thanks for the help
