66 mustang problems

Hey guys im having some serious issues and looking for some advice on what to do. The problem is this my mother in laws 1966 mustang wont start. Me and my father in law have gone through and replaced, starter relay, battire, voltage regulator, and a new ignition switch. The battire keeps dying over night. We charge it up and nothing. tonight we put the ignition switch in but cant get it to start again what else could be doing this. The only way we can get it to start in by jumping out the starter relay, we have replaced the relay twice already so we dont think its the relay. Thanks

neutral safety switch ( automatic trans ) or clutch cut out ( manual trans ).. as for a draw. got to pull fuses and check with a test light till you find the 1

wont even crank. You can jump out the starter selionid and get it to fire that way but thats only in an emergency not something we want to do all the time lol

Have you tried to start in in a gear other then park? If not try it and see what it does in the other gears just make sure nobody is standing in the way in case you nail it or something. Also push up on the shifter while you are trying to start it like you are holding it in park..JMO. Cole

Yep, neutral safety switch on the shifter or on the side of the trans where the shifter linkage hooks up. Cranking hot goes thru this switch, from the ignition switch to the starter relay.

isn't there a bypass plug for the NSS under the dash being some Mustangs got column shift auto's, and the wiring harness is the same for the Falcons?.. my guess is if it's there, it could have come out breaking the circuit

this is probally bad but i jumped out the switch ends that goes to the ignition and it started i think the nss is bad and will be replacing it. I think the voltage regulator might be the problem with the battire being drained it was hot and when i put the old one back on it never got hot and seemed to work fine

I have a 66 mustang that is a hodge podge of parts. From what I can tell it has a 1974 C4 trans and an early 80's V8. It is an automatic. The starter grinds on starting and for a few seconds after starting. I have replaced the flex plate which was slightly bent with the same result. I have tried 3 different starters all with the same result. I have also replaced the spacer betweeen the bell housing and engine. Could it be the solenoid or ignition switch? The ignition swith is new. Any help is appreciated.

66 mustang problems

Jaques

Since you mentioned a mix of parts the first thing I would check it that you have the correct starter and flexplate for the combination you have. They have 157 and 164 tooth flexplates with either 26 or 50 ounce counter weights. They have specific starters to match certain applications.
