67 camaro starter problems

I own a 67 RS that I bought 5 months ago and twice now after driving the car and parking it , the car won't start. All I hear is a relay clicking. The sound comes from 3 relay's mounted under the left fender on a bracket that I thought were for the hideaway lights. Once the car cools down down it starts fine ! I looked under the car and the starter looks like it's been replaced recently, also read other posts on the net about other camaros having similar problems when engine is hot (usually cars with headers)
mine is a stock 327 (no headers) any suggestions ??

Thanks

Heat soak

Doc here,

Heat soak is a common problem on a lot of SBC's..

A couple of things to try,
  • First be sure your cables are clean and tight at the starter and battery both. Check to see if you have your ground cable running direct to the starter area of the block from the battery, If not you might want to consider moving it there.
  • Next try some header heat wrap on the right header you should be able to find this at your local auto zone or mom & pop.
  • lastly, General Mystery, makes a heat shield for SBC gm starters you can probably order one direct from the dealer..

Any or all of these should cure the problem for you,

Keep us posted!

Doc

To my knowledge the 67 Camaro had no relays associated with the starter. I suspect that you car's starter system has been modified. I would insure that you have sufficiently sized wires from the battery to the engine and starter, and make shur the starter is up to the task. Make sure you have good grounds from engine to frame and body.

I also have a 67 RS Camaro that has had a series of starter problems. The latest being starter solenoids on new rebuilt starters that will engage the starter then internally short and keep running. You might want to check the wire that runs to the small post on the starter to see if it burnt and shorting to the exhaust manifold.

Thanks for the pointers guy's, I'll start by looking for a heat shield and check all the cables and grounds. The relay's I mentioned turned out to be for the headlight doors and they can be heard everytime the ignition is turned on but not related to starter problem. I'll post back later
