Being a "Unibody", the structure obviously has to be solid. The front end 'sheet metal' is actually stressed, structurally speaking. That's to say the sheet metal is what keeps the car together in large part. Because he readily admitted the car shimmies above a certain sped (and assuming the front end has been aligned and the problem remains) is pointing to a problem of some sort. It could be nothing more than an out of adjustment wheel bearing, or it could be pointing to major problems. There are a couple places in the shock tower area that need to be inspected closely for having become rusted/separated. Rust can hasten separation of these stampings, but even w/o rust present, there can still be separation of the structure in critical areas.
As has been said already, take it to a trustworthy mechanic who specializes (or has intimate knowledge of) the early
Mustangs. The thing in your favor is the availability of aftermarket parts up to and including complete bodies!
