68 327 I.D.
ok so i took the cast code off the block it read 3998180. could it be misstramped or maybe my eyes arent as good as they once were. cause i cant find this code on any site to id it as a 327. closest i come to is a 3933180 which reads as a large journal 327 . its all greek to me , however im curious if anyone knows if its a decent engine . its rebuilt and balanced never been run, the reason i got it no longer applies so im trying to get out of it but i need to pretend at least i know something about it. hp range etc

My resources don't come up with that casing number either, and the 3933180 shows as a 68-69 327 2-bolt, nothing you don't already know. If the deck hasn't been cut, can you get the codes of the block in front of the passenger side head?

From what I can find:
CE = 1957 265, HD clutch, Impala BUT, then they go on to say: Note: CODE CExxxx (counter or crate engine) was used from 1968 to current year. It represents any CID and is used to indicate this particular engine was replaced under Warranty. It is a direct replacement for the original equipment. It doesn't indicate what the original equipment was. GM went to the large journal in '68/'69 production years, then the 327 went away. That from Nasty Z28's site. I'm not a VIN or serial number master, and don't have a lot of resources.

BTW, what oil filter arrangement does that first motor have, canister or spin-on conversion on the driver side lower block or top mounted?
