What size and type of harmonic balancer does a 1968 327 motor out of a chevelle take. I know that they are a large journal motor, so I was told that they take a different harmonic balancer than small journal motors.

It depends, high performance? medium? low? I`m not sure of a difference in the small and large journal balancers. I do know that many of the small journal engines used a pressed fit and did not use a retainer bolt to keep the balancer in. If your 327 is a large journal block, you can use any neutral balance balancer except the 400 small blocks, and the later vortec balancer. You local parts store should carry the direct replacement balancer for your engine. If not, summit racing does.

The small journal 327 has a very small balancer.The large journal 327 needs a
large balancer, the 350 unit works well. The SFI summit brand is a quality
balancer for a good price.

Outside Diameter 6.625 in.

Not all small journal 327's used the small balancer. I know the 350HP 327 used the large balancer and had a crankshaft bolt in '66.
I think the high performance engines might have used the large balancer and maybe the milder versions used the small balancer.

I'd go with an 8" and be done with it. You can use that on anything but a 400.
