68 Camaro VIN tag GONE!!! HELP!!!

Hello, everyone!
I found a straight as an arrow 68 camaro yesterday. The owner purchased it from a storage bin auction, so he has no idea about the car. It has no interior or engine or tranny, just some trim and glass. The wiring harness is in the floor board. The best part of the car is NO RUST!!! I mean the floors, trunk cowl etc look brand factory new, like the car was kept inside it whole life.

OK, now that my rambling has gone on,or should I say my shock of the find. The BAD NEWS. The car has no VIN tag or cowl plate. Has anyone had a situation like this before? Are there any avenues out there where one can purchase a VIN tag and cowl plate? I mean I know I could look for a rust bucket and hope its vin tag in still in tact, but I thought there might be a different source.

Any info on this would be greatly appreciate, or any first hand experiences also.

Thanks and be well.

re: 68 Camaro VIN tag GONE!!! HELP!!!

You can purchase VIN tags on Ebay. A friend of mine bought a burned out wreck that was an original 69 Z/28. He stripped it of usable parts including the VIN tag. He sold the VIN tag on Ebay for a tidy sum. I would think that if you are not looking to turn the Camaro into an SS/RS, or Z/28, you can probably get a regular Camaro VIN tag pretty reasonable.

I would latch on to the car and worry about a VIN tag later. 68 Camaros are getting scarce.

Yep, but it is done all the time. That is why if your in the market for a 67-69 Camaro you better know what your looking at .

As stated by someone in you other post, the Camaro's had the VIN number stamped under the cowl on the heater side. It might be possible for you to read this and run a VIN check on the body. That would be the way to go.

Here is a link that shows the location.

re: 68 Camaro VIN tag GONE!!! HELP!!!

Its a felony to change vin numbers, find another number on the body or get a new vin all together.

EDIT: Thought I would add that by 'getting a new vin' I meant Legally getting a new vin from the proper authorities..

Illegal a hell is what it is.....

Illegal...against the law....look around for the proper vin numbrs and find out if the car's ever been reported stolen or why the tag's were removed..for no other reason than to hide what the car really is I suppose???
