68 chevy lights knob toasted all electrical?!?

Here's a goodie: I plugged a new (used) headlights/tail lights dash knob and wires plug into the old plug coming from dash. It smoked from vicinity of knob box and wires. Next no lights, no ignition, nada. Check fuses, all appear good. I have much of primary and aux wiring coming straight off ignition switch but lights come off harness and go through fuse box presumably. Not for Sunday, a hot beach day!!!

Headlight circuit is not fused at the fuse box, it is fused by a fusible link between fuse box and the battery, look for a problem between the battery and the fusebox, not under the dash. Possibly the horn relay on the firewall, it acts as a buss bar.

Get that headlight switch out of there before you smoke something again.

Eric, thanks (again) ... I'll look for that fusible link between lights and battery. SS, thanks for the diagram. Will there be any signs of burning. The only burn I found was at light switch lead.

Might not be obvious, some factory fusible links look like ordinary sections of wire, just the wire is smaller inside the covering, can break or melt off at one end and not smoke the insulation. Best method is to go to checking things with a meter, backtrack the power leads starting from the battery heading to the car components.

You may also need to investigate a burn or short between the two halves of the fuse box, the engine side and the under dash side, it has been known to happen.
